Title / Titel Flow and pulsation of the peripheral pulmonary arteries in presence of severe pulmonary regurgitation: a magnetic resonance study
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Pulmonary regurgitation is a frequent residual finding after repair of congenital heart disease by inserting a conduit between the right ventricle and the pulmonary arteries. If regurgitation is severe alteration of flow may extend into the pulmonary arteries side branches. Echocardiography provides good information about the dimensions of the pulmonary arteries but is not very accurate in quantifying blood flow.
The aim of the project is to evaluate the flow and pulsation characteristics of the pulmonary arteries by using phase-contrast cine magnetic resonance (PC MR) in patients with pulmonary regurgitation and to assess potential correlation between the dimensions and pulsation of the pulmonary arteries and blood flow, particularly regurgitant flow.
These parameters (flow profiles and cross-sectional area changes during cardiac cycle in the right and the left pulmonary artery) will be measured in all children undergoing MR examination for quantification of pulmonary regurgitation and dilatation of the right ventricle.
The results will indicate if the size and pulsation of the pulmonary arteries during cardiac cycle can be used to indirectly predict the degree of pulmonary regurgitation.
