| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Emotional disclosure research has demonstrated that expressing emotions, for example in writing about traumatic events, has beneficial effects on well-being and health. In a series of studies we linked this research area with constructs of psychology of motivation in conducting studies which have already tested and should test the role of motive dispositions in the expressive emotion – well-being relationship: Two longitudinal writing intervention studies showed that the affiliation motive moderates the effects of written emotional expression on well-being (Langens & Schüler, 2005). Two further longitudinal studies showed that expectancies, which are one of the most important motivational constructs to explain behaviour, strengthened the relationship between written emotional expressions on well-being and health (Langens & Schüler, accepted). A fifth study (Schüler, Job & Fröhlich, in prep.) tested how congruence of implicit/explicit affiliation motives and emotional disclosure work together in predicting well-being. In all studies we received strong empirical evidence that motive dispositions play a significant role in the expressive emotion – well-being relationship. Actually a longitudinal writing intervention study is conducted that should test further hypotheses concerning the relationship between motive-congruence, expressive writing and subjective well-being and health. |
