Title / Titel The phylai in the Eastern Roman Empire - Organisation, Tasks and Significance
(PhD Thesis)
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Die Phylen im Osten des römischen Reiches
Summary / Zusammenfassung The phylai, public subunits of the city-states in Greece and in the Greek affected east, are the subject of numerous historical studies analysing their functions that are particularly important for the internal organisation of the cities. Special attention is directed to the genesis of the phylai, which are including all citizens of a city-state, and their development in archaic, classical and hellenistic times.
The phylai, however, also remained in the eastern cities of the Imperium Romanum, but there they were subject to partly drastic changes and reorganisations. The aim of my thesis is to study the spreading and development of the phylai in the Roman Imperial period. All relevant sources are collected in a data base in order to be able to examine the organisation of the phylai of each city with its characteristics on a broad basis. This creates a vivid picture of the organisation, the tasks and the significance of the phylai in the political, administrative, cultural and religious life of the cities.
