Summary / Zusammenfassung C.G. Jung (1875-1961), the Swiss psychiatrist, is one of the most significant and critical figures of twentieth century psychology and contemporary culture. Remarkably the full body of his work has yet to be published. Between 1933 and 1941 he lectured at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology where he was appointed a professor in 1935. This meant a resumption of his University career, as he had held a post as lecturer at the Medical Faculty at the University of Zurich from 1904 to 1914.
The ETH-lectures are the most important series of lectures and the primary source for the understanding of Jung’s late work. Topics include a seminal study of the history of psychology, and account of the theory and practice of complex psychology, dream analysis, psychological types and the psychology of the unconscious, Jung’s most extended case study, studies of the spiritual exercises of Ignatius v. Loyola, the Yoga sutras and the symbolism of Buddhist meditational practices and medieval alchemy. Thus Jung provided a comparative study of the individuation process in various cultures and an attempt to construct a psychology which would have cross-cultural validity.
The text will be compiled from several typoscripts and shorthand versions of auditors, Jung’s own drafts, and the unauthorized English Version of Barbara Hannah, still privately circulated in several versions since 1936.
