| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Most research on the distinction between gain versus loss orientation has shown that people profit from approaching gains and that avoiding losses may even lead to detrimental effects on motivation, performance, and subjective well-being. Recent studies, however, have shown that these results might be restricted to young adults. In old age, maintaining an achieved level of performance and counteracting losses has positive effects on motivation and shows no negative relationship to subjective well-being. Up until now, middle adulthood has largely been neglected in these studies. We propose that middle adulthood is particularly interesting when it comes to gain versus loss orientation because, during this life stage, losses start to become more prominent, but there is still also room for gains in many life domains. A combination of experimental and experience sampling studies will address the affective, motivational, and performance-related effects of gain versus loss orientation in middle age.
