| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Patients with Major Depression suffer from severe emotional and cognitive disturbances. Emotional symptoms consist in predominance of negative emotional experience as reflected in extreme anxiety and sadness. Cognitive symptoms include overgeneralization, selective abstraction, arbitrary inference etc.. The neuropsychological and psychopathological profile is investigated in the course of the in-patient treatment. The neuropsychological tests and psychopathological scales are applied right after the admittance, after three weeks and before discharge from the unit. Results show continuing neuropsychological deficits in patients with MDD during the remitted phase of the illness. Persistent deficits in sustained attention, the mnemonic and strategic aspects of working memory and executive function associated with altered prefrontal neural activity patterns might be considered a trait marker. Since the performance in visual learning and memory improved significantly, it can be assumed that impairments in these domains represent a depression-related state effect rather than a trait marker for MDD. |
