| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The intention of the project is to present 18th century European philosophy within the framework of the 'Grundriss der Geschichte der Philosophie', which is the standard reference work on the history of philosophy in German language. The material is organized so as to emphasize individual philosophers and schools of thought; the introductions to each chapter provide the necessary information on the general context. In order to capture the conception of philosophy specific to the Enlightenment the project takes into consideration the social role philosophy played during the period as well as the increasingly pronounced differences between philosophy and the other disciplines. The 18th century series is divided into four volumes on the basis of geographical criteria (Vol. 1: Great Britain, North America, Netherlands; Vol. 2: France; Vol. 3: Italy, Spain, Latin America; Vol. 4: Germany, Scandinavia, Eastern Europe); within the individual volumes a chronological ordering is combined with a methodical one. | ||||
