| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Previous research on burnout in the teaching profession focused too narrowly upon the well being of the individual teacher. For this reason, we know little about the conditions under which burnout impairs the quality of the teacher-student relationship. The goal of the present study of 200 primary school teachers (grades 1 to 5) was to expand the symptomatology of the burnout syndrome to include teachers' negative reactions and attitudes towards students in the sense of "educational burnout". Using a list of 17 items, three negative reactions towards pupils (irritability, mistrust, and distancing) and two groups of teachers showing increased values on these negative reactions were found. The Type I group was made up of teachers with (relatively) high values on exhaustion and depersonalization, and low values on personal accomplishment. Despite low values on emotional exhaustion, Type II teachers (high depersonalization, low accomplishment values) showed the same high values for irritability, mistrust and distancing as Type I teachers. In contrast to current burnout theories, this finding suggests that stress-determined emotional exhaustion is not a necessary condition of "educational burnout". | ||
