Title / Titel Children's participation in school and society: Structural determinants and adult-child relationship

Summary / Zusammenfassung Objective: To explore children's participation in school classes with low and high participation in school and in the community in order to identify the conditions that impede resp. enhance children’s participation in these two important areas of their everyday living environments.

Study design: Quantitative multi level analysis of classes selected from the Swiss Unicef Survey “Giving Children a Voice” (n=840), including 1 parent for each child (n=840), 1 teacher for each classroom (n=60) and 1 community leader (n=60). Children vary in age (9 to 16 years old), gender, ethnicity, level of education, and participation in classes and in the community.

Sample design: On the basis of the nation-wide Unicef-survey (n=12'800) a sub-sample of some 840 children is drawn according to their different participation levels in the three areas of their life (family, school, community), and contrasting groups with high and low participation levels are built. Thus, it is possible to find out the causes for these differences as they are inherent in the specific opportunity structures of the schools and/or communities (and/or families).

Data collection: Data is collected by way of (different) questionnaires for the children, their parents, their teachers, and the leaders of the communities the children live in. Areas of interest include (1) the children’s resources determining their participatory engagement (e.g. family situation, siblings, social networks, health, political interests, knowledge of participation possibilities, self-esteem, communicative competencies, intro-/extraversion, participation experiences), (2) the adults’ concepts, attitudes and acceptance as to children’s participation, and (3) the opportunity structures given in the communities and in the schools.
