Title / Titel Encyclopaedia of the History of 13th-Century Philosophy
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Grundriss der Geschichte der Philosophie, begr. v. F. Ueberweg, Reihe Mittelalter, Band 13. Jahrhundert
Summary / Zusammenfassung The name 'Ueberweg' stands for the most extensive, comprehensive history of philosophy ever published. Since its inception, it has become the standard work on the history of philosophy for whole generations of scholars, teachers, and students of all academic domains. The new, completely revised edition will comprise more than thirty volumes, including five on the medieval period; it deals not only with the major thinkers, but also with numerous minor ones. The present project will cover 13th-century philosophy in the Latin world in three parts. The first part will present an overview of the academic institutions as well as of the reception and translation of ancient Greek, Arabic, and Hebraic philosophy. The second, central part covers the development of philosophy in the different geographical regions of Europe, offering detailed information on the philosophical authors and their works, while the third part traces these developments from the point of view of the different academic disciplines. Specifically, there will be chapters on logic, grammar, rhetoric; natural philosophy; the mathematical sciences; metaphysics; practical philosophy; medicine and alchemy.
The individual articles usually include encompassing bibliographies of primary and secondary sources, intellectual biographies, summaries of works which provide concise descriptions of the structure and content of familiar, unfamiliar and even poorly accessible texts. The main part of the articles consists of studies of the major lines of teachings. Finally, the reception of works and doctrines and the influence on later thinkers and movements are discussed.
Articles by P. Schulthess: Der Philosophiebegriff im 13.
