Title / Titel Prevalence and Early Diagnosis of Temporomandibular Joint Involvement in Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Background:
Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is the most common rheumatic disease in childhood affecting predominantly young children. According to recent research temporomandibular joint arthritis is a common manifestation of JIA and may severely affect growth and function of the lower jaw leading to important secondary interventions and health costs. Because mandibular joint arthritis is asymptomatic in most cases a feasible screening method needs to be developed to detect temporomandibular joint arthritis and initiate treatment before bony destruction will cause growth disturbance.
Aim:
To test different methods of examination (clinical examination, questionnaires, diagnostic imaging) for their use as a screening method for early detection of mandibular joint arthritis.
Methods:
All patients with diagnosis of juvenile arthritis followed at the university Children's Hospital Pediatric Rheumatology Clinic can participate in the study. Participants will undergo thourough examination by experienced speciallists in pediatric rheumatology and orthodontic dentistry. Magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound examination of the temporomandibular joint will be performed. Magnetic resonance imaging will serve as the gold standard against which the different methods are evaluated for their use as a feasible screening tool for early detection of temporomandibular joint arthritis.
