| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Violence prevention needs to rely on theories that can substantiate their relevance beyond confounding co-variates, No single theory of violence has ever been universally accepted by a majority of established researchers in the field. All theories can produce some empirical evidence for their validity. Calculating different models accounting for violence with multivariate logistic regression on a dataset of N = 21,314 observations and 85 different variables allows a direct comparison of the performance of operationalizations of some of the most important criminological schools. While the comparison between operationalizations can offer some clues to theory performance, definite conclusions should be drawn only after confirmation (or modification) by other cross-sectional interdisciplinary studies. Yet, some conclusions can be drawn from the results of the present study. It can be shown, that alone by selecting variables one can prove almost anything in the social sciences. In the absence of a comparison with other models, some single theory models with very poor performance would doubtlessly be published. Consequently, when a comprehensive database is available, it would be perfunctory to consider only a one-sided selection of variables (such as only sociological information or only biographical information, only psychological variables, etc.).
