Title / Titel The moderating role of motive dispositions on reactance
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung According to Brehm’s (1966) theory of psychological reactance people whose freedom to choose an action is threatened get motivated to defend and restore their freedom. Recent research provides evidence for an interaction effect of the area in which the restriction takes place and a person’s self-concept on the amount of reactive behaviour (Traut-Mattausch, Jonas, Niesta, Graupmann, & Frey, 2005). Applying this hypothesis on the motivational self-concept, namely the explicit motive system, we assume that when people are constricted in an area in which they have a high explicit motive, more reactant reactions are observable than when their constriction affects an area that is not relevant for their motivational self-concept. This assumption is tested in several experimental studies.
