| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Emotional adaptation to stressful experiences seems to be influenced by a variety of psychological and biological factors and their interaction with each other. Different lines of research indicate that pre- and postnatal stress experiences influence long-lasting or lifelong emotional, cognitive, and somatic processes. In order to elucidate long-term effects of prenatal stress, we will examine children in a quasi-experimental design of two groups of children whose mothers were at high risk for preterm delivery during the 2nd trimester but gave birth to a healthy child after the 34th week of gestation. We will examine the prevalence of psychosocial disorders in both groups of children, and assess their ability to cope with psychosocial stress. The study results may help to provide an understanding of the psychobiological effects of prenatal stress for emotional development during childhood and adolescence. This knowledge will be useful for developing preventive intervention programs in children and young adults in order to improve their stress reactivity and emotional adaptation to novel or unpleasant situations. | ||
