Completed research project

Title / Titel Development of in vitro strategies to propagate and characterize hemotrophic mycoplasmas
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung There has been a growing interest in hemotrophic mycoplasmas (aka haemoplasmas), the causative agents of infectious anemia in several mammalian species possibly including men. Haemoplasma are non-cultivable in vitro; thus, research relies on the propagation of haemoplasmas in splenectomized animals, a method with serious ethical concerns. The goal of this proposal is to explore an approach to replace these animal experiments. The project is based on an interdisciplinary collaboration of two research groups at the Vetsuisse Faculty with an intense exchange of expertise, which will strongly contribute to a successful outcome of the project.
