Title / Titel Systematic Analysis in Counterterrorism: Messages on an Islamist Internet-Forum
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Counterterrorism analysts are facing two challenges: there is either very little intelligence to work on, or else, there is too much. Often the two characteristics are combined, in the sense that a lot of insignificant information needs to be evaluated in order to find a few important clues that may (or may not) be hidden inside it. Particularly, this is the case in Internet communication, where no physical evidence (such as fingerprints, DNA, handwriting) can be collected. Nonetheless, the worldwide web is one of the most important sources for counterterrorism analysis. Monitoring the Internet and extracting information about Jihadists' intentions is a priority, given the degree to which radical Islamists depend on the web.

The five rules of "Systematic Observation" are applied and adapted to the needs of counter-terrorism, considering Arabic linguistics and also the cultural, political and religious aspects of Jihadists' messages, in order to assess the authenticity of manifestos posted by presumed hostage takers in Iraq, a case of an Islamist website analyzed by the Swiss Intelligence Service.
