Title / Titel Effects of hydroxyethyl starch (HES 200/0.5 and HES 130/0.4) and gelatin on renal tubular epithelial cells during sepsis
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Acute renal failure is a common complication of severe sepsis and septic shock. Correction of volume depletion is crucial to the prevention of acute tubular necrosis. HES are among the most widely used compounds because their volume-expanding effect is both large and long-lasting. The effect of HES on renal function remains controversial and has never been tested in detail. Most of the experiences are based on clinical observations and not on basic research data.
These studies will provide new insights into potential regulatory mechanisms of HES in this inflammatory context. Novel therapeutic strategies might be developed based on this information.
