| Summary / Zusammenfassung | What influences high-school students' decision to continue with a university education? We posit that two factors have been overlooked in previous research, whether a university degree fits (1) the adolescents' life planning, and (2) explicit as well as implicit gender-role attitudes. Although there exists equal access to higher education to both genders, girls might be less likely to decide for an academic career due to traditional gender roles, and especially when planning to have children in young adulthood. In contrast, ambitious work goals rather than family goals are proposed to be predictive of boys' university plans. With regard to gender role attitudes, we want to broaden the concept to its implicit (non-conscious) manifestation. We assume that even if girls report to adhere to an egalitarian ideal, the implicit knowledge of traditional role expectations can work against academic ambitions. | ||||||
