| Summary / Zusammenfassung | The SOTKAMO project is concerned with reengineering relational database systems with an object-oriented data model as target model. The solution analysed in this project is database migration which implies the transformation of a relational into an object-oriented schema and migrating the data to an object-oriented DBMS afterwards. The first part of the project is a comparison of relational and object-oriented database design and includes analysing deficiencies of the relational paradigm as well as reverse engineering facilities for badly designed/optimized schemas. In the second part a redesign environment is presented which allows a user in an interactive process to design an adequate object-oriented schema and an algebra for fully automatic database migration.
