| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Throughout the life span, people often have to choose from a shifting set of choice alternatives. In this research project, we are interested in the consequences of the exclusion of options before a decision is made. How do people react to a restriction of choice alternatives? How does such a restriction influence the evaluation of the remaining options? We assume that restriction might either be experienced as a loss of freedom of choice or as a relief from “hyperchoice” (too much choice). We are investigating these consequences of restriction from an information-processing perspective proposing the valence of the choice itself (expectation of positive or negative consequences of choice) as a determining factor. We are currently testing these hypotheses in microanalytic experiments, first on memory for features of the lost option and second on changes in the evaluation of the remaining options after exclusion of one option, by systematically manipulating the expectation of consequences of a given choice (positive vs. negative). Initial results provide evidence for higher recall probability of features of the excluded option as compared to the remaining options. Weitere Informationen |
