Original title / Originaltitel Praemenstruelles Syndrom (PMS), Depression und Chronische Unterbauchschmerzen. Online Validierung eines deutschsprachigen Fragebogens
Summary / Zusammenfassung Purpose of the Study:
The effects of ovarian hormones on central nervous system processes, such as emotion regulation, are of great interest today. Particularly, menstrual cycle linked patterns of cognition and behavior, such as menstrual cycle linked mood changes and changes in pain sensitivity, might be relevant in order to investigate psychiatric symptoms. Examples for classified cycle-dependent disorders are the Premenstrual Dysphoric Syndrome (PMDD) and the Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS). However, very little is known about the differences between menstrual cycle-dependent vs. cycle-independent phenomena of these disorders over time.
Methods: Based on the DSM IV criteria, we developed a German questionnaire in order to assess PMS in women. With the help of this questionnaire, we aim 1) to estimate the number of women suffering from PMS, 2) to disentangle menstrual cycle-dependent phenomena from cycle-independent phenomena in these women, and 3) to evaluate the possible overlap between PMS and related clinical symptoms, such as depressiveness and chronic pelvic pain.
