| Summary / Zusammenfassung | This is a collaborative research project by Peter Gallin (Universität Zürich), Nicolas Lienert (Realgymnasium Rämibühl), Anita Pfau (Universität Zürich), Urs Ruf (Universität Zürich), Ralph Schumacher (ETH Zürich), Elsbeth Stern (ETH Zürich) and Felix Winter (Universität Zürich). It is situated within the general framework of the "Zürcher Hochschulinstitut für Schulpädagogik und Fachdidaktik" (ZHSF). Enabling students to guide and direct their own learning is an important goal of teaching. Ultimately, students should be prepared to acquire new knowledge on their own, both in their studies at university and later on in their professional careers. Being able to control their own processes of learning will already contribute to making school-learning more effective. It may reduce the number of misunderstandings students harbour about their own degree of knowing, lead to a deeper understanding of the subject or domain in question, and may further the integration of new knowledge on the basis of a student's previous knowledge. Enabling students to guide and direct their own learning therefore means teaching them to take responsibility for the things they already know. This requires providing them with concepts that are clear and can easily be put into practice. This project aims to find out which types of concepts best enable students to start directing their own learning.
