Completed research project

Title / Titel Psychobiological subgroup study in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and comorbid psychological disorders
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Original title / Originaltitel Psychobiologische Subgruppendifferenzierung bei Patienten mit Irritable Bowel Syndrome unter Berücksichtigung komorbider psychischer Störungen
Summary / Zusammenfassung Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by abdominal pain/discomfort associated with altered bowel habits. Even though recent research assumes a more comprehensive disease model than the earlier concept of disturbed motility, the pathophysiology of IBS remains insufficiently understood. Newer neurobiological disease models suggest alterations within the central nervous system (CNS) which might directly or indirectly impair autonomic and enteric functioning.
In line with this, psychosocial stress is supposed to influence the onset and progression of gastrointestinal symptoms, possibly mediated by an activation of various physiological systems. Additionally a broad body of research studies documents that psychological distress and/or mental disorders such as anxiety and depression are common in patients suffering from IBS.

State of the art research on IBS should therefore integrate a variety of biological and psychological factors. However, until now there is no data about coherences between specific psychological and/or biological alterations and predominant bowel habits (IBS sub-type).

Our aim in the present project is 1) to investigate psychobiological characteristics in IBS patients including mental disorders in detail, and 2) to relate these characteristics to the predominant bowel symptoms.

With this project, we will identify group specific biopsychological alterations in IBS patients, and thus improve the comprehension of the disease process in IBS. Our results might lead to new inputs for further (group specific) IBS treatment.
