Title / Titel Injured and Sick Children in 18th Century
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung What happened in the 18th century to sick children or to children after accidents and injuries? A patient-book, written by the surgeon of the hospital in Zurich in the years 1781-1784,is one of the rich sources, providing an insight to the perception and treatment of young patients.
This types of sources describe not only the medical view on patients, it shows also social topics like the worth of children’s life, the position of children in family and society, gender-aspects in child-specific treatment, and the perception of children in medical institutions. Who cared about the children outside the family? Or what importance was attached to the possibility of a permanent disability?
Like authors in other fields have already shown, the perception of children in pre-modern times was not always dark and insensible. Against the background of a medical market with a broad sample of different offers, the careful treatment of children seems to correspond a demand in the 18th century society.
