| Summary / Zusammenfassung | A collection of evidence on the figure of the ancient dream specialist, the man or woman, who knows more about dreams as others, who has not only experience and insight but also authority to explain what dreaming is and what the significations of dreams may be. The authority of the dream interpreter is not naturally given, it is a product of his place in society and more precisely in certain social situations. Often it is contested and rivalled. Most famous was the second century A.D. Artemidorus. Freud as many other modern psychologist has referred to this Artemidorus, claiming him as a great predecessor. The books of Artemidorus are giving the greatest part of the 33 authors known to us from the testimonia in the "Graecorum de re onirocritica scriptorum reliquiae" collected by Dario Del Corno. But there is more evidence in the corpus of the ancient texts and inscriptions. (A book project) |
