| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) was discovered more than 40 years ago. It is a gammaretrovirus naturally occurring worldwide in domestic cats and some related small felids. It is not only of veterinary but also of human medical interest as an animal model for tumor and AIDS research. FeLV infection can lead to fatal neoplasia, degenerative diseases of the hematopoietic system, and immunodeficiency. Most FeLV pathogenesis and vaccine studies were conducted prior to the development of sensitive, specific real-time TaqMan PCR and reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR for the detection and quantification of FeLV proviral and viral RNA loads. It is the goal of the present study to employ these methods to further investigate FeLV pathogenesis, target tissues and influence of the viral distribution of the outcome of the infection. In particular, tissues of cats with different duration and outcome of FeLV infection will be investigated for the presence of FeLV provirus and virus and the respective loads will be quantified by real-time PCR. | ||||||
