Title / Titel Molecular characterization of Italian haemotrophic Mycoplasma isolates
PDF Abstract (PDF, 14 KB)
Summary / Zusammenfassung Haemotrophic Mycoplasmas (aka haemoplasmas) are the causative agent of infectious anemia in several mammalian species. In the cat, three different haemoplasmas have been described and reported to occur in several European countries including Switzerland and the UK. In a recent study and in collaboration with our laboratory, Dr. Gentilini and his colleagues (University of Bologna) had investigated the prevalence and risk factors of hemoplasma infections in domestic cats in Bologna, Italy. Feline blood samples had been collected during a one-year period from cats presented at the Veterinary Clinical Pathology Service, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bologna. Samples underwent haematological routine analyses and an aliquot of blood was stored to perform PCR assays specific for Mycoplasma haemofelis and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma haemominutum’ and ‘Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis’. The aim of the present study is to analyzed haemoplasma PCR-positive samples by cloning and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The molecular characterization of positive sample allows conformation of the positive results of PCR assay, to molecularly characterize Italian strains of haemoplasmas and enables to identify different variants based on 16S rRNA gene.
This study is conducted by Dr. Marilisa Novacco in the Clinical Laboratory, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich.
