| Summary / Zusammenfassung | Background: The inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), e.g., Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic idiopathic inflammatory disorders of the intestine and/or colon associated with a variety of systemic manifestations. Different bronchopulmonary involvement has been reported in adult patients with IBD, including bronchial hyperreactivity. In patients with chronic inflammatory respiratory diseases such as asthma the level of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) was found to correlate with intensity of airway inflammation. Aim: The primary aim of the presented study was to measure level of FeNO and nitrite (NO2) concentration in EBC in paediatric patients with clinical stabile IBD. Patients and methods: Twenty children with clinical stabile IBD were enrolled in this prospective study. Nineteen age-matched healthy children served as a control group. The mean age in IBD patients was 13,9 years (range 10,1 – 18 years), and the mean duration of disease in IBD patients was 20 months (range 7 – 60 months). Corticosteroid therapy was terminated at least 4 weeks before the study visit in each patient. After the clinical examination and completion of questionnaire, the patient underwent the following tests in order: skin-prick testing (SPT), measurements of FeNO, spirometry, body plethysmography, and TLCO and collection of exhaled breath condensates. |
