History of the ancient city of Palaipaphos
Original title / Originaltitel
Paphos-Projekt
Summary / Zusammenfassung
The Paphos Project is directed by Prof. Dr. HonFSA, Prof.Dr. and Dr. FSA. It aims at reconstructing the history of the city of Palaipaphos in Cyprus and of its famous Sanctuary of Aphrodite. Excavations at Kouklia/Palaipaphos, conducted since 1966 under the aegis and with financial support of the German Archaeological Institute, form a central part of this research project. The work of the Paphos Projekt considerably enlarged and refined our knowledge of the main phases and turning points in the history of Palaipaphos. The continuity of occupation on the site from the Chalcolithic period to the early Byzantine era is well established; a considerable medieval settlement is attested at least since the 12 c. AD. Seen as a whole, the history of the settlement spans a time of nearly 5000 years, from c. 2800 BC to the present day. Three of the sites excavated yielded results of special historical significance. In the Sanctuary of Aphrodite the continuity of cult has been definitely established for more than 1500 years, from the Late Bronze Age (c. 1200 BC) to the Late Roman period (end of the 4th c. AD). The investigation of the defences outside the North-East Gate of the city revealed the remains of Siege operations by a Persian army in 498 BC. The site represents the rare example of an archaeological context dated to the year and at the same time one of the very few ancient sieges which can be reconstructed from the earth. The excavation of the Medieval cane sugar mills and refineries of Couvoucle was the first research project in industrial archaeology in Cyprus and revealed new economic and technological aspects of this important industry during the 13th to 16th centuries.
